Authors: Аполлов, А. Б. Abstract: In 1986 - 1988 three summer research cruises were made in ICES Subdivisions 26, 28, and 29 of the Baltic Sea. It has been established that considerable changes that have been taking place in the quantitative structure and composition of the bottom fauna communities since the 1960-ties may be attributed to the fluctuations in hydrological regime and increasing antropogenic load on the sea ecosystem. The disappearance of species, decrease in the number of communities and in the species diversity have been noted, as well as the increase in the average biomass of macrobenthic fauna. The upper boundary of the lifeless zone has risen. The abundances of species tolerant to pollution have been increased. In 1987 - 1988, the decreased water heat budget and salinity caused the increase in the abundance of relict crustaceans within the reduced area of their habitat. At present favorable conditions are observed for food items of fishes-benthophages. Ф.; Лине, Р. Я. Abstract: Long-term dynamics of spring spawning herring larvae abundance and growth in 1960 - 1988 in the Gulf of Riga areas was considered. Their periodical fluctuations, connected with the environmental conditions (winter severity, water temperature, food supply) were revealed. The decrease of herring year-class strength in the 1980s comparing with the 1960 - 1970s was observed. That was caused mainly by the thermal regime (increase of winter severity and decrease of water heat reserve in the gulf in spring), decrease of larvae food supply (especially at the period of herring transfer to exogenous feeding), increase of anthropogenic pollution of the gulf. It was shown, that against the total background of larvae abundance decrease in the 1980s in the Gulf of Riga, comparing with the 1960 - 1970s changes in their quantitative distribution according to areas took place. The importance of the southern area considerably increased, and of the eastern and northern areas decreased.
