| Abstract: | On the basis of long-term ichthyoplankton surveys conducted in February- August (1968 - 1974) from the Bornholm area to the Gulf of Finland eggs and larvae abundance was estimated monthly with the extension of their distribution being taken into account. Seasonal dynamics in sprat spawning was considered on the background of changes in thermal and oxygen regimes and spawning stock structure. The ratio of spawned sprat eggs and produced larvae by the sea areas within the spring-summer season was examined. The duration of mass spawning and the time of larvae occurrence in large amounts in the sea areas were determined. In the southern and central areas May - June are the main months for sprat reproduction, in the north-eastern ones — June - July: within this time up to 81 - 88 percent of eggs are spawned, and up to 85 percent of sprat larvae are produced. As the spawning takes place within a prolonged spring-summer period in various ecological conditions, several larvae generations appear differing by the time of hatching, size composition, the number of body miomers, and growth rate. There are 37 - 38 body miomers in the larvae of spring spawning since they develop in lower temperatures than those of summer spawning having 32 - 33 body miomers. Body miomers may be used as an ecological index in the investigations of seasonal sprat groupings. |
